On February 14, the long-anticipated Veeam Backup & Replication V12 was released!

We have been trusting Veeam with our backups for more than 10 years and are one of Veeam’s top partners with more than 1,000,000 back-ups. This release is exciting to us techies because there are 585 new features and capabilities in the cloud, security, and enterprise-focused areas.

V12 reduces vulnerabilities, decreases the overall attack surface, and hardens the capabilities customers need in today’s evolving IT ecosystem. The 4-in-1 solution combines Backup, Replication, Storage Snapshots, and CDP (Continuous Data Protection) under a single platform and delivers faster and more flexible data protection, recovery, and retention options.

Overall, the new Veeam eliminates data loss and ransomware while reducing long-term archive retention costs.

Here are some of the major Security and Backups and Recovery enhancements in this release:

Security

  • Expanded ransomware protection: Veeam version 12.0 includes new features to help prevent ransomware attacks, such as immutable backups and the ability to quickly restore data from secure, offsite backups. V12 also allows back up directly to Object Storage! Veeam improved the storage format and added a health check light feature for Agent-based Object Storage targeted jobs. Wasabi integration and a Smart Object Storage API are also included.
  • Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is now able to protect access to the Veeam Console. No need to comment – awesome upgrade. Secure access to the backup console with optional two-factor authentication (2FA) that’s based on Time-Based One-Time Passwords (TOTP) as per RFC 6238. You can enable 2FA for individual accounts in the Users and Roles settings of your backup server and enroll in an authenticator application of your choice to receive these one-time codes.
  • Automate session logoffs can be enabled to reduce the workload on the Veeam server— A configurable console lockout/timeout has been added to automatically close idle backup console sessions. Don’t worry if that coffee is taking longer than expected!

Backup and Recovery

  • Multi-VM Instant Recovery: recover multiple VMs simultaneously in a single step to reduce recovery time and minimize downtime.
  • Enhanced backup and recovery capabilities: improved NAS backup performance. In addition to the existing functionalities for image-level backups, V12 adds immutability options for NAS backups, standalone agent backups, backups of AWS and Microsoft Azure-hosted workloads, transaction log backups, and enterprise application plug-in backups. Also, you can now perform instant file share recovery in addition to the existing capability to publish file share content directly from backups as a read-only share. This allows your end users to get back to work in just seconds after the catastrophic loss of production NAS.

If you are debating whether Veeam 12 is worth your time and budget, the answer is, Yes, it is. Avoiding data loss and keeping costs in check are important priorities. Veeam 12 helps you achieve both.

NOTE: if you are using the previous version Veeam Backup & Replication v11 it will stay supported through February 2024.
