I
have read several articles lately about the trials and tribulations of
people posting comments to blogs, rants on websites, and
reviewing products that have come back to haunt them. Seems
harmless enough to post something on the web, since many of us have
done this, but keep in mind that once it is out there, you usually have
no way of taking it back. Many of us have personal websites as well to
share photos and general happenings with family and friends as well,
but never think that other people may find the site.
Face it, everyone has, at some point, googled a name to see what they
could find out about them. It could have been an old college friend or
even a prospective employee. I had a similar experience recently
with a new hire. Waident is looking to add to its team and we stumbled
into a possible opportunity to bring on a one man firm.
I googled the guy and low and behold, found his personal
website (the first couple of results of the search) that held thousands
of pictures. Most of these pictures were outings at bars and a wild
trip to Vegas. I'll let your imagination take over to give you an idea
of what the pictures were all about. Needless to say, Waident never
brought him on board even tough we considered it for a moment since he
could have been a lot of fun a trade shows : )
Be cautious about what you post on others websites, including your
employers. Treat it as being on your permanent record (remember the
days back in high school where that was the worse thing possible) Try
googling yourself to see what others might find out about you. Make
sure and use different combinations of searches like adding your
current or previous employer name. You never know what you may find
until you check.
